First Decision

HTI or PPP? Choosing Your Whitsundays Airport

The first question every private charter client flying to the Whitsundays needs to answer is which airport. There are two: Hamilton Island Airport (HTI), sitting on the island itself, and Proserpine Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP), on the mainland roughly 40 minutes from Airlie Beach. The right choice depends entirely on where you are going once you land. Getting this wrong adds significant time and cost to your trip.

Best for Hamilton Island & qualia
HTI
Great Barrier Reef Airport · Hamilton Island
Runway 14/32, 1,766m. Accepts aircraft up to Boeing 737 and Bombardier Global Express 7500. Privately owned by Hamilton Island Enterprises. No hangar. Overnight parking by prior permission. Contact: airportops@hamiltonisland.com.au
Direct access to Hamilton Island Resort, qualia, and the marina
qualia staff collect luggage from aircraft on arrival
No ferry transfer needed for Hamilton Island guests
No Customs/CIQ — domestic only
Suits Race Week arrivals (15–22 Aug 2026)
Best for Airlie Beach & island tours
PPP
Whitsunday Coast Airport · Proserpine
Runway: 2,072m. Accepts aircraft up to airliner size. More runway flexibility than HTI. Better suited for heavy jets and aircraft not cleared for Hamilton Island. ~40 minutes by road to Airlie Beach marina, where most sailing and bareboat charters depart from.
Better for sailing charters departing Airlie Beach
Longer runway, more aircraft types accepted
Lower landing fees than Hamilton Island
Access to Daydream Island, South Molle via ferry
Ground transfer ~40 min to Airlie Beach
The practical rule If you are staying on Hamilton Island, qualia, or departing on a racing yacht for Race Week, land at HTI. If you are doing a bareboat or skippered sailing charter from Airlie Beach, or visiting islands other than Hamilton, land at PPP and arrange a ground transfer. Many private jet clients make the mistake of assuming HTI is always the right choice — it is not if your tour departs from Shute Harbour.

Private Jet Charter to the Whitsundays — Cost from Every Major City

All prices below are per aircraft, one way, in AUD including GST. They cover aircraft hire, crew, and fuel. They exclude landing fees at HTI or PPP, catering, and any repositioning costs if no aircraft is based near your departure city.

From
Brisbane
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $10,000 – $24,000
Light Jet to Midsize · ~1h 15m to 1h 30m
Closest east coast city. A Citation CJ3 or Phenom 300 covers BNE to HTI in about 1h 15m. Brisbane has a strong local charter fleet which keeps availability high and positioning costs low. Best value departure point for the Whitsundays.
From
Sydney
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $18,000 – $36,000
Light Jet to Midsize · ~2h to 2h 20m
Most popular departure point. Sydney to HTI is approximately 1,450km. A Phenom 300 handles it non-stop in just over 2 hours. Archerfield Airport in Brisbane is sometimes used as a positioning hub to reduce costs on SYD originating charters.
From
Melbourne
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $22,000 – $44,000
Light Jet to Midsize · ~2h 30m to 2h 50m
Worth every dollar avoided in transit. Commercial Melbourne to Hamilton Island requires a Brisbane or Sydney connection — commonly 6 to 8 hours total. A light jet does it in under three hours, direct. Strong case for private on this route.
From
Cairns
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $13,500 – $28,000
Light Jet to Midsize · ~1h 15m
Perfect Whitsundays-Great Barrier Reef combo. Cairns to Hamilton Island by private jet is approximately 75 minutes. Ideal for travellers combining the Great Barrier Reef with a Whitsundays stay. No commercial direct service — see our Cairns to Hamilton Island guide for full detail.
From
Gold Coast
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $12,000 – $26,000
Light Jet · ~1h 20m
Underused departure option. Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is often cheaper in landing fees than Brisbane, and the Coolangatta area has charter operators. Worth comparing OOL vs BNE quotes specifically when departing the greater Brisbane-Gold Coast region.
From
Perth
→ Whitsundays (HTI/PPP) $55,000 – $90,000
Midsize to Heavy Jet · ~4h 30m to 5h
Long hop, strong case. Perth to the Whitsundays by commercial requires a Brisbane connection. A midsize or heavy jet does it non-stop and eliminates a full day of travel. Group economics are compelling at 6 or more passengers.

Why People Fly Private Here

What the Whitsundays Offers Private Charter Clients

The Whitsundays attract private jet clients for reasons that go beyond simple luxury. The geography is the point: 74 islands, Whitehaven Beach consistently ranked among the world's finest stretches of silica sand, the Great Barrier Reef accessible from Hamilton Island by helicopter or vessel, and qualia, one of Australia's most consistently awarded luxury resorts, sitting on the island's northern tip with 60 water-facing pavilions and a couples-only policy that makes privacy genuinely achievable. Charter clients are typically not choosing private jets over business class for the in-flight experience. They are choosing it because they want to control the entire day, and on an island with limited commercial frequency, that matters more than almost anywhere else in Australia.

🏖
Whitehaven Beach

Seasonality

When to Fly Private to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays has one of the most distinct seasonality profiles of any Australian charter destination. The dry season is genuinely spectacular. The wet season is genuinely challenging. Understanding this shapes not just when to go, but how far ahead you need to book your aircraft.

Lowest rates

June, July, and August are the best months. Clear skies, low humidity, consistent southeast trade winds that make sailing excellent, and water visibility on the reef that peaks during the dry. August specifically is dominated by Race Week, which runs 15 to 22 August in 2026 for its 41st edition. Private jet demand in the week before and during Race Week is intense: operators report some of their strongest booking periods of the year. If Race Week is your reason for visiting, your aircraft needs to be confirmed well in advance.

The shoulder months of April to May and September to October offer excellent conditions with noticeably softer pricing on aircraft. May particularly is one of the most underrated times to visit: the wet season is definitively over, crowds are lower than June, and charter availability is better. February and March sit in the heart of the wet season. Conditions on the Whitsunday Sound can be rough, some island resorts reduce their programs, and reef visibility is lower. Charter pricing is at its softest, which can represent value for clients visiting Airlie Beach specifically rather than the outer islands.

How to Book

How to Charter a Private Jet to the Whitsundays

1
Decide: HTI or PPP?

This is the single most important planning decision. Hamilton Island (HTI) for stays on the island itself, qualia, or Race Week. Proserpine (PPP) for Airlie Beach, bareboat and skippered sailing charters, or island-hopping itineraries departing from Shute Harbour. Getting this wrong means an unexpected ferry or a 40-minute road transfer.

2
Verify your operator's CASA AOC

Every operator conducting commercial passenger flights in Australia must hold a current Air Operator Certificate. Check the register at casa.gov.au or call CASA on 131 757. Operators including Charter One Aviation, Navair Jets, and Adagold Aviation all serve the Whitsundays corridor and hold current CASA certification.

3
Request an itemised quote

Ask for a written quote that separates aircraft hire, HTI or PPP landing fees, fuel, catering if applicable, and any positioning costs if the aircraft needs to relocate before your departure. HTI landing fees are higher than PPP and should not be buried in a lump sum.

4
Ask about empty legs

The east coast charter market generates regular positioning movements between Brisbane, Sydney, the Whitsundays, and Cairns. Empty leg flights on these corridors can be 40 to 60 percent below standard rates. If your dates have a day of flexibility, ask your operator or check empty leg boards from Brisbane-based operators specifically.

5
Confirm HTI parking if staying overnight

If your aircraft is remaining on Hamilton Island while you stay, confirm overnight parking with the airport well in advance at airportops@hamiltonisland.com.au. The apron can fill during peak periods, particularly Race Week. No hangar is available at HTI.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are staying on Hamilton Island, at qualia, or attending Race Week, land at HTI. The island's ground team will meet you and you can reach any resort or the marina within minutes. If you are doing a sailing charter from Airlie Beach, or visiting other islands via Cruise Whitsundays ferries, land at PPP and arrange a 40-minute ground transfer to Airlie Beach. Do not land at HTI expecting to easily access the Airlie Beach departure point — the ferry from Hamilton Island to the Port of Airlie takes around 35 to 60 minutes and must be pre-booked through Cruise Whitsundays.
A light jet such as the Embraer Phenom 300 or Cessna Citation CJ3 from Sydney to Hamilton Island costs approximately AUD $18,000 to $28,000 one way per aircraft. Split among six passengers that is roughly $3,000 to $4,700 each. A midsize jet runs $26,000 to $38,000. These are indicative figures in AUD including GST. Positioning costs may apply if no aircraft is based in Sydney at time of departure, and HTI landing fees are additional.
Not directly — Whitehaven Beach has no airport. You fly private into Hamilton Island (HTI) or Proserpine (PPP), then transfer by boat or helicopter. From Hamilton Island, qualia guests can book helicopter tours to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet as part of the resort's excursion program. A scenic helicopter flight from HTI to Whitehaven takes approximately 15 minutes. From Airlie Beach via PPP, day boats and sailing vessels run to Whitehaven Beach regularly throughout the dry season.
Hamilton Island Race Week 2026 runs from 15 to 22 August, its 41st edition. It is Australia's largest offshore keelboat regatta, attracting 200-plus yachts and crews. Private jet demand in the days before and during Race Week is exceptionally high, with aircraft travelling from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Cairns. Apron space at HTI can reach capacity. If Race Week is your purpose, your aircraft should be confirmed months in advance, not weeks. Expect premium pricing across aircraft, accommodation, and transfers during this window.
Yes, and the east coast corridor generates them regularly. Aircraft positioning from Brisbane to HTI before picking up a returning charter, or Sydney-based jets heading north, create genuine empty leg opportunities. Discounts on empty legs to the Whitsundays typically range from 40 to 60 percent below standard charter rates. The catch is fixed timing and limited route flexibility. Ask your operator or broker specifically whether any empty legs are available around your dates, and subscribe to empty leg notifications from Brisbane and Sydney-based Queensland operators if your travel dates are flexible by a day or two.
